The Prediction Biz: In One Year and Out The Other; Six Top Astrologers Read New York's Stars For 2003, and
OBITUARY: The Solar Eclipse and The Death of ABC News King Roone Arledge: What's the Connection?

Weekly Update: Jan 6-13, 2003

:: Forecast: 2003 and Time Out article
:: Obituary: Roone Arledge

{ Note: For the next 2 months (through Feb 11 '03), Mercury (ruling thought, communication, and movement) will be in heavy and serious Capricorn (this includes the mercury retrograde Jan 2-22) with Saturn in Gemini  (responsibility with words) forming a "mutual reception". While this configuration is far from  mentally light and cheery, it can promote the right conditions to strategize effectively, and get a good deal of writing done. Take all correspondences very seriously, and take the time to clear misunderstandings across the board.}

Mercury Retrograde begins and the new moon at 10 degrees Capricorn on Jan 2, 2003 at 3:23 PM has 21 degrees Gemini Rising in Washington DC. That is the exact degree of the planet Mars in the USA horoscope. Mars is the planet of War and Jan 15 marks the 12th anniversary of desert storm. It would be a miracle if fighting didn't occur in Iraq, if not other locations. I hope I'm wrong.

"Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it"
- George Santayana

"I know of no way of judging the future but by the past"
- Patrick Henry

That very adage is precisely what prompts good astrologers to look backwards to gauge the future.

So What do the Stars Say about 2003?

2003 will be extremely dramatic - especially in the world of politics.
The celestial "markers" for 2003 are similar to the years:

1920: Uranus in Pisces: corresponding stories: prohibition, flappers, women get the right to vote, the "speakeasy". Today, we have freedom of speech in question. hmm...
1956: Suez Canal, the Andrea Doria sinks, the parting of the red sea in the film The Ten Commandments, Elvis debuts & takes the world by storm.
1974/5: Gas shortage, Nixon resigned, SNL launched, "Jaws" kept us out of the water.

The Prediction Biz: In One Year and Out The Other
Six Top Astrologers Read New York's Stars For 2003:
By SHELLEY L. ACKERMAN

For those of us with stars in our eyes, 2003 looks to be a year of giddy highs and troubling lows. After all, Uranus enters Pisces in March, and the last time that happened, the flappers were running wild, prohibition was law-banning alcohol, and organized crime was riding high. Next June, Saturn enters Cancer-a phenomenon not seen since Nixon resigned, SNL was launched and a gasoline crisis threw our lives into paralyzing gridlock. How will these and other planetary influences affect The Big Apple this year? I asked five of my astrologer colleagues to join me in charting a course for 2003. Here's what we saw for the next 12 months.

Note in 2003, three key planets change signs (Uranus ->Pisces, Saturn -> Cancer, and Jupiter -> Virgo ... that's a lot in one year). And fiery Mars, the red planet of "chi" will charge forward, linger, and go backwards in the oceans of Pisces for 6 months starting June 16, prompting awareness that many headlines this year will be about water: drinking water: is it clean? cruises: are they safe? - not in late summer, geysers, tsunamis, oil spills, and possible battles in water. Who wants to even go there?

The phrase: "the red sea" will be on everyone's lips, and ruby red slippers on everyone's feet.

Our astrologers are: Stephanie Azaria, Linda Joyce, Susan Miller, Liane Thomas Wade, Bob Cohen, and myself. The last 2 are featured here. Please pick up Time Out NY January 2-8, 2003 to read the others and enjoy the cool layout. By the way, my "heroic whistleblowers" prediction was handed in to Time Out over 2 weeks before The Time Magazine Persons of The Year cover came out.

:: Shelley L. Ackerman ::

1) The Economy
New York will struggle as in the Mayor Beame years 1974-5, comedy clubs and poets cafes revive, thrive and expand. Website building and maintenance remain a steady source of $$. Popular new careers: Ethicists, Interfaith Ministers. Many with extra room will host Bed and Breakfasts in their apartments and homes.

2) Real Estate
Rentals and Coop/Condo prices slide in June and there will be a 2 to 3 month window for a great deal before interest rates climb. Downtown rebuilding will feature many spas and oxygen bars. Hot new neighborhood: Saint Nicholas Terrace 118th-140th St.

3) Local Politics
Labor and transportation problems are eclipsed by a harrowing close call in the subways. Safety in the tubes becomes priority # 1. A local politician may be involved in a drug or bribery scandal.

4) National/World Politics
Alan Greenspan will leave his position, and alliances shift dramatically and unexpectedly, with a potential unraveling of the administration akin to occurrences of '74. "W" is weakened and Saturn places him in a precarious position from Sept-November.

5) Arts & Entertainment
The Number is "Nine". The magnificent musical revival starring Leo heartthrob Antonio Banderas and B'way veteran Chita Rivera will be the hot ticket. Comedy makes a thrilling comeback, as does romantic music, ballroom dancing, hoop skirts and real melodies.

6) Fashion & Trends
Ruby Red Slippers for women and men; The "Cirque du Soleil Look" is in. Colors: shimmering gold, iridescent blue-green, purple with brown. Hats with mini fish bowls make a splash. Water-skis and jetskis are out (too dangerous this Summer) Mermaid motifs and heroic whistleblowers are in. Everyone's talking about the "I" word (integrity).

7) Sports
80th anniversary of The Yankees first game at Yankee stadium in April buoys the team to a fantastic season. Steinbrenner may face tough times and retreat under Saturn in late Summer/Fall. Jason Giambi weathers a personal crisis of faith but pro that he is, you'd never know it. He triumphs in 2003-4.

8) The Environment
In May, Mars conjoins Neptune in Aquarius and untraceable airborne germs make news. Best to boost immunity with supplements in April. "Oil and water don't mix" is the mantra following one oil spill too many, and conservationists make a comeback. Solar Power is taken seriously and implemented. A prominent oil executive shocks us with his deflection.

9) Science/Medical/Tech breakthrough
An unexpected lucky accident (akin to the spilled acid preceding Alexander Graham Bell's cry "Dr. Watson, I need you"), leads to a startling discovery that may inexpensively cure cancer or even AIDS. The 100th anniversary of Wright Bros first flight in Dec is celebrated with exhilarating aviation news.

10) The "It" person
Neptune, King of the Sea. Holding him in our thoughts with prayers night and day to clean the oceans and keep the peace down there, lest it all becomes the "RED SEA". "Neptune-Mania" will take hold. (Hey in 1975, "it" was a mechanical shark)

:: Bob Cohen, PhD. Washington DC Mathematics Professor, Tarot Scholar ::

1) The Economy
The economic forecast moves from unbridled optimism to measures to avert a serious disaster. The administration's ineptness leads nowhere but to a frustrated public looking for pennies from heaven.

2) Real Estate in NYC
The WTC makeover issues cause serious passions to arise once again. Proposals are laid out on the table only to be immediately "tabled". No action is the immediate outcome.

3) Local Politics
Aquarian Mayor Mike's honeymoon with the city is over as financial pressures set in. Hizzoner's darker side shows up as he loses his personal "cool" in finance, business, and even in personal relationships.

4) National/World Politics
Osama Bin Laden is discovered living in luxury in a protected compound. A secret deal with US allows him to live comfortably in exchange for his "chilling out" and remaining quiet.

5) Arts & Entertainment
The entertainment world disappoints with more obvious co-optation by big business and government. With few creative innovations, Art and Media are blatantly used for purposes of manipulation, propaganda, and profit.

6) Fashion & Trends
The fashion industry takes a tough financial "hit" as people have limited money to spend. It will be a "do your own thing" year for fashion, though hemlines will go up while the economy goes down.

7) Sports
NJ Devils workhorse and goaltender Martin Brodeur becomes a brooder and wonders what it is he really wants in life. His workload becomes an issue; new beginnings in his personal life could affect his athletic performance.

8) The Environment
Federal Gov. acts surprisingly more globally and less locally. Room for optimism here: global issues around 'water" resources abound with some success, pleasing some die-hard environmentalists.

9) Science/Medical/Tech breakthrough
Genetics is the top story, as was the case in Atlantis prior to that continent's demise. Major philosophic questions persist while a fascinating genetic code distinguishing what is human" from "animal" is discovered.

10) The "It" person
John McCain. The "Maverick" Senator from AZ's star is on the rise again in late August as Jupiter enters Virgo and boosts his celebrity and message.

The Solar Eclipse
and The Death of ABC News King Roone Arledge: What's the Connection?

The Solar Eclipse on December 4 occurred just under 12 degrees of Sagittarius, right on the ascendant of the horoscope of the United States.

In ancient times, eclipses almost always marked the death of a monarch, the end of an era and/or the birth of a future monarch and the beginning of a new era or regime. Prince William was born on a Solar Eclipse and his mother, Princess Diana died on one.

Roone Arledge was a monarch in his world, a "King of Communications" as it were. He was born on July 8 1931 in New York on Long Island, (no birth time available yet) but even without it, his chart is fascinating. He has a stellium in the sign of cancer (Sun, Pluto, Mercury, Jupiter), the Moon in Aries conjunct Uranus (he's soooo RED, isn't he?), and Saturn in Capricorn. His chart forms an in your face cardinal T Square. At first glance, you can almost hear the familiar raging theme: "Are ya ready for some football?" His Venus is at 29 Gemini (recently visited by the Saturn station in October), and Mars and Neptune in Virgo, There are no fixed planets in his chart which leads one to speculate that a birth time may place all of those cardinal planets in fixed houses, after all, it takes a lot of fixity to stay in one place for over 30 years. Roone reined at ABC since the 60's.

Sagittarius rules journalism, publishing the media, sports, and the news. Roone Arledge revolutionized television news in America and for the last 30 years he was The King of News at ABC. He was on the scene at the 1972 Olympics during what became the first televised terrorist event. It was Roone who created Nightline with Ted Koppel as an extension of the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979. He championed the careers of Barbara Walters, Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel and countless others. He blurred the lines between news and entertainment, so much so that we hardly know the difference anymore.

His death on the eclipse and on the Saturn Return of the Munich Olympics marks the end of an era in broadcasting, and perhaps connects us to an even more frightening and less predictable round of such news and coverage.

As for the degree of the eclipse, the Sabian Symbol for 12 Sagittarius is:

A flag turns into an eagle;
the eagle turns into a chanticleer saluting the dawn*.

How fitting an exit for an American Broadcasting King?
