Taurus New Moon: May 1 2003 (What a week!)

How I love that song!

This past week, as we embark on a new moon in Taurus and Mercury plods retrograde through the density of that sign, New Hampshire's Old Man of the Mountain's Face fell off (picture above, see article links below), and "Mr. Virtue", former cabinet member William J. Bennett, has egg on his.

Bennett, the holier-than-thou self-appointed arbiter of right and wrong was exposed as a heavy gambler, with losses reported at approximately $8 million over the past decade. (See "The Bookie of Virtue" on Beliefnet.com).

One can't help but wonder how the media would be all over this revelation like white on rice had this been the reported indiscretion of a more "liberal" former cabinet member.

This, along with the killer tornado in Kansas (shades of the Wizard of Oz?), the sealed McCarthy transcripts of 1953/54 made public on it's Chiron return, growing SARS concerns, and heroic mountaineer Aron Ralston chopping of his arm to survive being pinned by a boulder, speaks to the drama that will likely continue through the next 30 days of Saturn in Gemini. Twenty-seven year old Aron Ralston began this adventure on April 26, the day that Mercury turned retrograde. A Mercury retrograde station is not the best time to begin anything, especially and adventure with such danger.

Planetary stations are very powerful (the next one will be Neptune on the day of the lunar eclipse, May 15), and often it is advisable to lay low on them. Mercury will station direct on May 20.

Aron's birthday is October 27, 1975, and first year students of astrology recognize that Scorpio's ability to survive is paralleled by none.

What do these stories have in common, and what is there to be learned?

The new moon in Taurus (earth) at 10 degrees, semi-squared Saturn in Gemini. Saturn rules mountains and many agree that Saturn in Gemini since 2001 has been particularly inhibiting regarding motion and freedom of speech.

How interesting that at the tale end of Saturn's journey there that Bennett's words are coming back to haunt him, and McCarthy's sealed documents are becoming public. Revisits such as these often occur on retrogrades.

The themes have to do with God, moral judgment against others, actions motivated by fear and the will to survive against all odds.

In The Outer Planets and Their Cycles, Liz Green talks about Saturn in the 9th house as being a very moral, punishing, old testament-style God. Perhaps the symbolism of that face falling off the New Hampshire mountain is not so much a message about of our crumbling values, but more about the need to look within to our own divinity.

The bible says, "Judge not lest ye be judged", and Mr. Bennett was one of President Clinton's harshest critics during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. And while the President should be held higher than others as an example of moral fitness, there does seem to be a double standard. Perhaps Bennett may do well to consider an apology to Bill Clinton before we learn of the specifics regarding the reported "amenities" he has been receiving along with other high rollers?

Politically too, there may be some deep insight that can be gleaned from this sequence.

Historically, politically conservative types are more inclined to sweep their "shadow'" under the rug while Liberals types are just that: more inclined to be open to, and accepting of, the imperfect and darker side of man's nature, and well, more "liberal". This definition of liberal is important to ponder, as we head toward 2004. Tolerance of one's own darkness always paves the way to healing, and tolerance of the imperfection of others paves the way for peace in the world.

Think about it.

Finally, a word of advice as Mars approaches the conjunction to Neptune in Aquarius: Make sure that your virus protection is up to date, both on your PC and in your system. Mars/Neptune = spiritual passion, but it can also = infection. Oregano oil, Colloidal Silver, and Astragalus are worth looking into.
