After last week’s missive which covered the Luxembourg-sized ice shelf that broke free in Antarctica and the subsequent earthquakes in Japan, Chile, and Taiwan, the dramatic weather-porn expressed itself this week by way of rogue waves that killed two passengers aboard the luxury liner “Louis Majesty” traveling from Barcelona to Genoa in the Mediterranean Sea.

Continuing along “erratic ocean behavior” lines, 26 ships were stranded among icebergs this week in and around the Baltic.
Is this a part of the “global weirding” story (many thanks to Liz Smith of wowOwow.com for generously spreading the word in her column), or is it a function of the last round of wild and unpredictable Uranus in oceanic Pisces 2010-11? Time will tell, but I don’t think we’ve seen the end of these errant ocean spirits, not by a long shot.
The February 26 banter between Dick Cavett (who filled in for Gail Collins) and David Brooks in the NY Times which posed the question: “What’s happened to cultural discourse?” was such a tasty hit, the NY Times posted round two on Friday evening.

This week’s timely conversation between Brooks (b. Aug 11, 1961, seven days after Barack Obama) and Dick Cavett (b. Nov 19, 1936) entitled “In What Can We Trust” did not disappoint. They discussed the depressing state of dwindling confidence in nearly everything and everyone at the expense of citizens and consumers everywhere. Cavett cited chapter 7 on the vital importance of trust in a book entitled, “Rules to Break and Laws to Follow”. Brooks added this nugget: “I’d say trust is about reciprocity, about establishing a pattern of communication and cooperative volleys that get coated by emotional and moral commitment.”
And I say this is the perfect conversation for these trying Saturn in Libra days and nights.
It’s a great piece, very timely, and addresses the erosion of trust in the wake of foreclosures, “hopeless wars”, money-gluttonous drug companies, Toyota, China (tainted toys and milk), Tiger Woods, Spitzer, Paterson, Edwards, the fat-cat bonuses that followed tax-payer funded bailouts, and plenty more. Do check it out.
For what it’s worth, it’s interesting that NY Governor David Paterson, in hot water for interfering with an aide’s domestic dispute, and John Patrick Bedell, the mentally ill Pentagon shooter (who was killed by guards), were born 19 years apart (a nodal return) on May 20th in 1954 and 1973 respectively.
That 29th degree of Taurus, the degree of the Pleiades, known as the very embodiment of sorrow, is also one tough cookie. As of this morning, Paterson said that he’s not going anywhere.
Finally, after nearly three months of frustrating retrograde motion in the regal but ego-centric fixed sign of Leo which began on Dec 19, 2009, the red planet and lord of war, aggression, and bravado, will stand still and slowly begin to move forward at 0 Leo 18 on March 10th.

Planetary stations (standstills about to switch direction) are very powerful, as they underscore and underline a particular degree of the zodiac. And though Mars turns direct on March 10, from Feb 27- March 20, ‘he’ will transit backwards and forwards at the same first degree of Leo.
The Sabian Symbol for Leo 1 is: A Man Is Under Emotional Stress and Blood Rushes To His Head.
According to Sabian Symbol expert, Aussie astrologer Lynda Hill, “This will be a testing time for many as patience is likely to be a bit thin on the ground. There are, as always, good sides to this symbol, especially if you're paying attention to where you're putting your energy. It can imply ambition and getting fired-up about something, but also charging off in all directions at once, events coming to a head, too much excitement, too many plans, too much pressure... but then there's the shove that's often needed to get yourself out of your own way.”
During this time it behooves us to keep anger in check, and to offset the “too hot to handle” energy with our best relaxation techniques. Count to ten (or a hundred) before making any crazy moves. On a practical level, be not dismissive of any ‘symptoms’ that might warn of heart problems or of a stroke.

ARIES: Amorous adventures ascend as Venus enters your sign and takes up with Mars on the 7th, but this super-seductive industrial strength hero (or heroine as the case may be) comes with baggage and an agenda. This new and thrilling love interest is as willful as he (or she) is hot. Though he may intend to lure you into a vortex of no return, Saturn will put the breaks on and infuse the situation with sobriety and a reality check that saves the day, possibly by making it awfully inconvenient for you to do something really stupid.
TAURUS: Every year, when your ruler, Venus enters your 12th house of secret liaisons and hidden motives, things can get really interesting and really complicated very quickly. So whether this manifests as a dream date or as an excursion into the inner workings of your being, there’s buried treasure to be discovered and relished. On the home front, the Mars station in your 4th house could show up as the family patriarch in flexing his muscles, an aggressive burglar, and/or too much fire- literally, in the house. Watch wiring, cooking, boilers, and everything concerning ‘heat’ in your environment, and err on the side of caution. There’s safety in numbers.
GEMINI: Friends may be in a “me, me, me” mode and may get testy as Mars, the ruler of your communal 11th house, stations in your 3rd, but there’s no need for you to take the bait. By being a silent witness, you may benefit from a member of the group who in the name of loyalty, takes up your cause and does your bidding. The alignment of Mercury and Jupiter in your 10th house bodes well for a compassionate dialogue on the vocational front. This is the time when a few beautifully chosen words can move hearts and minds, and maybe even a mountain or two.
CANCER: Well, well, well! That beautiful standstill of Mars in your 2nd house of income, met by Venus in your career house could spell quite a win for you professionally, which may come by way of a feisty and ambitious young woman who champions your cause. Though she may be inexperienced, don’t you dare look this gift horse in the mouth. The alignment of communication planets Mercury and Jupiter in your 9th house of legal, foreign, and philosophical affairs could bring a favorable “review” from someone in a high place. That kind of ink is always good.
LEO: Mars, that bold and often brazen planet of will and drive takes a stand in your sign and fills you with confidence, bravado, and determination, and that’s a very good thing. However, when this combination is as potent as it is now, there’s little patience for anyone else’ agenda or for taking in nuances of what is being said. Your challenge is to find a way to stake your claim without coming off like an uncivilized Neanderthal. The Mercury/Jupiter alignment in your sensitive, sexy, and money-centric 8th house, could lend itself to some sweet talk with whoever it is that controls or shares the purse strings. Be sure both of you are on the up and up and that neither has had too much to drink.
VIRGO: This is one of those weeks in which you must make peace with what you desire versus what you really need. Now is not the time to throw caution to the wind, and splurge on a major purchase or to commit to anything extravagant. On the other hand, if you can finagle a great deal, what the heck, go for it! A partner, spouse, or BFF needs to chat you up big time. Listen and respond thoughtfully to what is shared- it will do you both a world of good.
LIBRA: Venus enters your partnership-oriented 7th house and forms one heck of a powerful alliance with Mars in your 11th house of friends and community. It’s a great set up for a relationship that is founded in a shared vision for the future. Be careful to not be too much of a stickler or a critic lest you get in your own way and mess up something that might give you great pleasure. On the work front, make use of the exceptional communication energy and solicit those that have been on your list. Some could respond very favorably.
SCORPIO: With the help of a female employee or co-worker, the standstill of your co-ruler, Mars, in your career-oriented 10th house could see you saving the day by stepping up when called to fill-in as leader in the workplace. Be strong and humble- it’s a killer combination. The meet-up of Mercury and Jupiter in your 5th house speaks of a creative and productive conversation in a fun environment that leads to better team-building. Choose your ‘spot’ for this event carefully, it’ll make all the difference in the world.
SAGITTARIUS: Is there anything more exhilarating than a romantic těte a těte with one who inspires you on a physical and a spiritual level? So whether this comes by way of an excursion, a crush on someone unattainable, or a chance encounter that may or may not pan out (your friends will discourage this one), the net result is still pretty darn good. No one can take away that fabulous feeling. Mercury and Jupiter align in your 4th house and some sweet and fruitful conversations with a partner and family members will remind you all of just how warm, cozy, and close you all really are.
CAPRICORN: Time to spruce up your home and get some of those deferred projects out of the way? Damn straight it is! PLUS it will add value to the place which is always good- especially since you’re contemplating a move or a sale. Don’t be distracted if a petulant teenager or a female adult who is acting like one begs for you to provide rules and boundaries. Though you’re sick to death of being the heavy, somebody’s gotta do it. If asked to attend a neighborhood meet-up, do so. The connections made at this time will come in very handy and soon.
AQUARIUS: The standstill of Mars opposite your Sun is bound to get your dander up and place you in the midst of a showdown or two. And though you’re a highly skilled diffuser of tense situations (when you want to be), there’s no need to engage in any of these hot potato situations: your adversaries are too agitated to be receptive. The funny thing though, is that their unreasonable behavior (and willingness to fight) could advance your cause. Don’t ask me how, but stranger things have happened. Mercury and Jupiter in your 2nd house of income aspects you career house well. Time to renegotiate for more $$?- I think so.
PISCES: Your vocal charm and way with words this week could sway the hardest of hearts and win many minds over. The trick is to be clear about your message. The Mars station in your 6th house of health and day to day routine places emphasis on heart and back issues (treat yourself to a massage or a check up) and may force a showdown at work or with an underling (that has been a long time coming), which could be a big fat blessing in disguise: Venus in your 2nd house of income supports the move which could result in a better financial picture. But be reasonable- being greedy will backfire.
